Westminster is over, and now the 2013 campaign begins in earnest. This week we saw several fresh faces with BIS rosettes. Up to now this year, most of our BIS winners have come from last year’s Top Dogs. This week, only five of the 26 BIS winners were among the Top 100 Dogs All Breeds in 2012. Here are a few of the newcomers that I think have interesting Back Stories.

Among the Best In Show winners were two dogs with top-winning fathers. The Bearded Collie, GCH CH Dunhill Celebration, is one of two BIS-winning offspring of GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins, who was the Number One Herding Dog in 2011. Olivia picked up her first BIS last October and finished 2012 with one BIS and eight Herding Groups. She picked up her first BIS of 2013 this week on Saturday in Hartford CT at the First Company Governor’s Foot Guard Athletic Association day one show.

GCH CH Heywire’N Highfield’s Hey Look Me Over

Down in Winter Haven FL, the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Heywire ’N Highfield’s Hey Look Me Over, daughter of GCH CH Ripsnorter’s Mt View Lookout JH, was Beverly Vics’ BIS at Saturday’s Lakeland Winter Haven Kennel Club show. Her father, Scout, was the Number Two Sporting Dog, in 2009 & 2010, and the top-winning German Wirehaired Pointer of all time until his litter brother, GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm, broke his record back in August. Saturday’s win was Heyleigh’s first final. Given her pedigree, I’m pretty sure it won’t be her last.

Another BIS winner is more of a ringer than a fresh face – the Standard Poodle, CH Del Zarzoso Salvame From Afterglow. The British-born Dino was the UK’s Number One Utility (Non-Sporting) Dog and Number Three Dog All Breeds in 2011. He made a splashy debut here in America at December’s AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, winning the Non-Sporting Group. He was Charlotte Patterson’s Best of Opposite Sex at Westminster over an outstanding field that included 2012’s Number One Sporting Dog, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction.
