Celebrating Bests, Back-to-Backs, Specialties & A Few Special Firsts
This past week was full of excitement with several Nationals and prestigious Clusters taking place from Coast-to-Coast. There are also some records about to be broken, a farewell to a “Classie” girl, and a reflection on the loss of a true friend to the Papillon community.
English Toy Spaniel GCh LTO Prosperity “Richie” won back-to-back Bests at Grand Island Kennel Club under Mrs. Pat Trotter and Mr. Edd Bivin. Richie is a top five ETS. This was Richie’s first Best In Show of the year. Catching up with Susan this morning, she said:
The timing could not have been better! The English Toy Spaniel GCH LTO’s Prosperity,is in wonderful condition, showing great and happy as can be! I am always excited to see the smallest in the line up win! It seems as if they have to try the hardest to keep up with the big dogs! He is the newest to the Carter Group and being a past cocker spaniel breeder, dear to my heart!
Great excitement is also happening in Field Spaniels as “Gideon” Ch Promenade’s Pay It Forward closes in on the Field Spaniel record winning his 10th Best In Show. Giddy is owned by Jane Chopson, Jane Schildman & Nicki Briggs Kuhn, and usually handled by Elizabeth Jordan-Nelson but yesterday it was Larry Fenner that piloted him to the win. Nicki offered:
Jane Schildman (Promenade) is the breeder. He’s a great show dog and at home just a funny, busy, and wonderful field spaniel companion. Jane Chopson was my partner and she died last May. She was the dog person, not me…but she left me with Gideon the show dog and she wanted him to continue his career. So I did. Never thought he would do sooo well or that I would find myself at Westminster (He went BOB) Jane already had a FS ,Josh, whom she showed for a few years. Josh is now 8. In a million years, I never thought I would be this involved in dog shows. It has been a lot of fun, I must say. …. She knew a good dog when she saw one. Giddy got his first BIS on May 12, 2013. Jane was alive and so she knew his show career was going to be great. I am very thankful for that.
Karen Florentine had much to celebrate with dogs being shown in both Florida and the Maryland Clusters. We’re waiting for the full results of today before telling the full story; it’s a good one and worth waiting for.
In addition to Susan Carter’s English Toy Spaniel back-to-back Bests, she was also busy with her Bloodhound winning a Best & RBIS at Terre Haute Kennel Club Bloodhound “Nathan” GCh Flessner’s International S’Cess won BIS under Mr. Bill Shelton on Saturday and RBIS on Sunday. Susan Carter delighted with Nathan’s weekend said,
Normally when I go to dog shows I watch my dogs lose! I have felt for a long time that I am a bad luck charm! Yet this weekend I watched Nathan, GCH. Flessner’s International S’cess win BIS at the Terre Haute show and RBIS the following day! Within some breeds it is easy to find good dogs, easy to put them up and easy to make them a top dog. Yet in other breeds it is not so easy to find them, but when you do…WOW! Plus it is sometimes easier for a judge to put up a more popular breed of dog. I am so proud of Nathan’s accomplishments! AND, as always he gave the judges his trademark stretch during his exam!! Thank Mr. Shelton for recognizing Nathan’s quality.
The Glen of Imaal GCh Finnabair Ardmore Ned handled by Beverly Wright Osment and owned by Donal & Ann Doyle & Mary McDaniel, DVM claims the first & second group wins for the breed in 2014 in Lousiana.

Siberian Husky GCh Topaz Bad Action “Reese” handled by Lauren House and owned by Ron Tang celebrated their first Best In Show at the Chief Solano Shows in Vallejo, Ca.
GCh Aubrey’s Moon River “Rebecca” won BISS at the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Potomac under Mrs. Joanne McCann and handled by Sherri Hurst. She’s the number two Pembroke and the number 14 herding dog. Vincent Savioli reports she’s won eight Specialty BOBs and was the 2013 National Specialty Winner.
Classie Retires In Style. Going out with a flourish, the top winning MinPin and Toy Group dog ever, GCh Marlex Classic Red Glare won the MPCA National and the Top 20 to put the final touch on a spectacular career. Summarizing Classie’s career, Maripi Wooldridge wrote on a facebook post :
Great ones are born not created, no matter the money or the number of wins they acquire.. this is true in anything in life. We can spin it all we want, but Classie is one of the very few “real” great ones of our lifetime. I have been so very fortunate to witness her evolve from a wild puppy to the ultimate show dog, and what a thrill she has given us all. Armando you have golden hands, again, those are born not learned or taught. Congratulations on a outstanding show career, always competitive and humble, a very thin line to walk and one you walked with absolute grace. Hats of to you, the whole Marlex Min Pins team and family and most surprising to me in this day in age..your National breed club…..recognizing greatness and celebrating the accomplishment together as one.
