AFTER more than 30 years, Nestlé is to end its sponsorship of the Pro Plan/Dog World Pup of the Year competition.

The company wrote to championship show secretaries last week telling them: “As part of our planning for 2015 we have finalised a review of our marketing strategy… This means making some difficult decisions, the most significant of which is to withdraw from the Pro Plan/Dog World Pup of the Year competition.”

The company says it will honour its commitment for 2014 which includes sponsorship of the final, due to be held at Crewe Hall in February.

The statement from Nestlé says: “We remain committed to the breeder community which has seen our support increase significantly year on year. We are simply choosing to manifest that support in different ways.

“We are planning to attend a greater number of championship shows and to support show societies and breeders with new approaches, soon to be announced.”

DOG WORLD managing director Stuart Baillie said: “We are obviously very disappointed that such a long-standing relationship is coming to an end and we were only told about Nestlé’s decision at the same time as the championship show secretaries, so we have had very little time to consider where we take the Pup of the Year competition from here.

“We are committed to working to maintain a contest which recognises the best young dogs coming through and over the next couple of weeks will be looking to find a way to allow that to happen.”
