Agalactia, plus Euro Dog Show 2012

Editor Susan Chaney interviews an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine to learn about a condition in bitches called agalactia. When a dam fails to produce or “let down” milk after whelping, the cause is most often genetic. Find out about the hormones that govern milk production, and learn about the drugs that can prompt the quick release of mother’s milk.

Contributing writer Karl Donvil reports on Euro Dog Show 2012, sponsored by the Romanian Kennel Club. The Romexpo in Bucharest may have welcomed fewer dogs than organizers had expected, but the more than 6,100 dogs that competed certainly didn’t disappoint the spectators. Find out how a social media campaign nearly sabotaged the show, and meet the spectacular Lhasa Apso that dominated the competition.

Many of this year’s top show dogs are featured in their own beautiful mini-websites on Best In Show Daily. Simply click on a banner ad to see the dog’s up-to-date show history, plus a slide show of photos that reveals exactly why it’s a top dog.

Bucharest Show Draws 6,157 Dogs

But then, when the August 31 deadline to enter arrived, they counted only 2,237 dogs, while 12,000 to 15,000 were expected. more

Dam’s Lack of Milk Is Rare, but Likely Genetic
By Susan Chaney

It’s a good thing that agalactia, the lack of milk in a dam, is a “really uncommon” condition in healthy dogs because “sadly, there’s not very much information about it,” says Margret L. Casal, D.V.M., Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia. “There’s a lot more information about it in people than there is in dogs,” she says. more
