A Legislative Update, plus the Buzz About English Cocker Spaniels

Senior Editor Christi McDonald reports on one New England town’s proposal to ban “pit bulls,” and a New Jersey community’s new ordinance that redefines a kennel. Legislative Updates: Ban on Hold in Rhode Island City; Tightened Restrictions in N.J. Town

On October 16, 2012, Woonsocket, R.I., City Council President John Ward introduced a proposed ban on pit bulls in Woonsocket, R.I., a city of about 42,000 people 15 miles north of the capital of Providence. According to the Woonsocket Patch, the ordinance would “ban anyone who does not already own a pitbull from acquiring one.” more


Breeder Buzzwords – The English Cocker Spaniel

Most canine historians accept the idea that the Spaniel is of Spanish derivation. Sporting dog authority C. Bede Maxwell, however, does not count herself among them.

In her masterful work, “The Truth About Sporting Dogs,” published in 1972 by Howell Book House, Maxwell writes, “We know…,by available documentation from British archives, that by channels of diplomacy he moved between countries and courts, as gifts between Kings and Princes, Lords and Ladies.
