Better Pain Management for Dogs, plus a First Dog’s Portrait

Editor Susan Chaney reports on two new studies at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine that will examine pain management in dogs. Recovery and relief are the focus of research being conducted by a team led by an American College Veterinary Surgeons diplomat and KSU professor of clinical sciences. Discover how improvements after treatment for osteoarthritis will be quantified, and learn about one pain medication’s potential for delivering relief without serious side effects.

Presidential pets often become celebrated public figures, occasionally even outranking their masters in the popularity polls. Senior Editor Christi McDonald reflects on one such pup, whose best-selling memoir raised money for her mistress’ foundation, and whose portrait by pet portraitist Christine Merrill was donated to the AKC Museum of the Dog by the William Secord Gallery.
