The NAIA Conference, plus Mathematical Beauty

“More than 100 people – veterinarians, breeders, lawyers and agricultural producers – from all four corners of the United States gathered earlier this month to consider the future of animals in America at the annual National Animal Interest Alliance conference, held this year in Redondo Beach, Calif.” So writes Editor Susan Chaney in her report of the two-day event deemed a “huge success” by NAIA Founder Patti Strand. Find out about the various industry leaders who are coming together “to take back the conversation about animals.”

To the uninitiated, dog shows are sometimes viewed as a kind of beauty pageant, with a lot of emphasis on hair care. Purebred dog fanciers, however, likely consider dog shows as exhibitions with exacting standards and quantifiable criteria. Find out how mathematical beauty plays a part in the evaluation process, and be reminded that decisions made in the ring are often guided by an exalted mind or spirit.

Show Dogs: Mathematical Beauties?

Dog shows are sometimes criticized as being mere canine beauty pageants, self-aggrandizing spectacles where dogs are paraded around for the chance to win a blue ribbon and a title or two. To the uninitiated, the backstage bottles of hair spray and assorted flat irons certainly seem to suggest that physical beauty – or at least hair dressing – is a consideration when show dogs are presented before the judges. more
