Detecting Heart Murmurs, plus Traveling with a Puppy

Editor Susan Chaney interviews a clinical professor of cardiology at the University of Madison-Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and learns that a heart murmur may be caused by any one of several conditions. A congenital malformation is just one cause of the disease that experts grade on a scale of one to six. Find out about the five conditions that are the major causes of heart murmurs, and learn about the treatment options and the prognosis for recovery of each.

On a recent flight from Salt Lake City to Philadelphia, DFR Blogger Kayla Bertagnolli’s carry-on luggage contained a Beagle puppy headed for her new home. The experience went well for both Kayla and little Dewey, who seemed delighted with the attention she received in the airport during a routine layover. Check out photos of the tri-colored traveler in today’s DFR.
