Native Russian Breeds, plus Shows Closing April 17, 2013

Senior Editor Bo Bengtson introduces several dog breeds with origins in the world’s largest nation. Russia has produced a diverse collection of native breeds, from the tiniest of Toys to several powerful and imposing guard dogs. Meet some of the less familiar Russian breeds that have joined the world community of dog lovers.

“With costs of everything skyrocketing these days, it’s so nice to see shows with more affordable entry fees.” So says Senior Editor Christi McDonald in her preview of the Utah Beehive Cluster where the clubs are “absorbing” the $3 per entry AKC service fee. Several shows will offer special features on the first weekend in May, including the Caddo Kennel Club in Marshall, Texas, and the hugely successful Bucks and Trenton shows on the East Coast.

Many of this year’s top show dogs are featured in their own beautiful mini-websites on Best In Show Daily. Simply click on a banner ad to see the dog’s up-to-date show history, plus a slide show of photos that reveals exactly why it’s a top dog.

The Utah Beehive Cluster, whose four all-breed shows with rally and obedience trials will be held Thursday, May 2, through Sunday, May 5, 2013, deserves mention for one specific act of what I think is kindness to their exhibitors. The clubs are “absorbing” the $3 per entry AKC service fee, so that their entries are just $18 for Bred-by and Puppy classes and $25 for regular entries. Junior Showmanship is just $10. more

Peter the Great, the one who first turned toward the West and made Russia an empire to be reckoned with in the rest of the world more than 300 years ago, had a little Terrier named Lizette whose embalmed body can reportedly still be viewed in a St. Petersburg’s museum. more
