Bo Looks Back, plus Crosstraining Your Puppy
It requires decades in the fancy – or an amazing collection of preserved dog publications – before one can start looking back to see what’s happened since the mid-1800s, when comparing dogs in an organized way first began in the U.S. Senior Editor Bo Bengtson meets both criteria. Today he pulls pith from a selection of publications that he has very nearly at his fingertips and shares some observations made in The Kennel-Review in 1923, by Bert Heath in 1948 and Bettie Krause in 1993, to name just a tempting trio. Take a stroll back in time to see what astute observers were thinking in years gone by.

Many handlers steer clear of anything unrelated to the show ring when handling their young hopefuls. Deb Eldredge, D.V.M., takes a completely different approach with her puppies. She wants them to grow into versatile, athletic conformation champions. Today, in part 1 of her series on crosstraining, she’ll try to convince you that, rather than damaging a dog’s performance, obedience training can get you and your dog to that “CH” sooner.

Best In Show Daily invites you to share your knowledge and experience with our readers – among the most active participants in the dog game. If you’ve written an article you’d like to see published on Best In Show Daily or would like to pen one, please email us at
