Mildred Bryant examines a Great Dane in the mantle pattern.

Mildred Bryant drew an entry of 46 Great Danes to the closer for the OKC Summer Classic. I started in the sport before we had all the color-pattern variations in Great Danes. As usual, I sought out a breeder/owner to lead me through the colors and patterns. One pattern I had not seen a lot was the Boston Terrier-like mantle.

GCH CH Lobato’s Code Red

The dog that judge Bryant chose as her Best, GCH CH Lobato’s Code Red, is a fawn.

GCH CH Wolfblitz Crimson of Seraphim

I dropped by Nikki Riggsbee’s ring to see her 11 Borzoi, an entry that included several colors, patterns and types. I’ve been a fan of the Borzoi ever since seeing a photo of Jean Harlow in a white satin gown, being pulled along by two white Borzoi. Today’s breed winner, GCH CH Wolfblitz Crimson Seraphim, a striking red and white, would have looked very much at home with Miss Harlow.

GCH CH Voici Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire

I left my own Italian Greyhound, Pepe, at home this trip. So we won’t tell him I am here at Bradley Jenkins’ ring to see him go over 14 Iggies. While many prefer the Irish pattern (think Basenji) on an IG, I like the pieds (think racy Smooth Fox Terrier). Judge Jenkins sided with the former, selecting GCH CH Voici Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire, a seal and white in the Irish pattern.
