I found Purina’s P5 app a very useful tool for new or newer dog owners who wish to become more active with their dogs. Downloading the app, however, was not as easy for me as it could have been.

I rarely have reason to download any apps at all, so inexperience in this regard was probably a factor. However, the app downloaded only on my iPhone, not on my computer, and the Purina logo that appeared on my iPad was different from the Purina P5 icon. (What I got, for unknown reason, was the Proplan xRay icon, with instructions in Spanish. No idea why.)

There’s a note under “Requirements” that says “This app is optimized for iPhone 5,” which may explain the inability to open it on the iPad or computer. (P5 will be available shortly in an Android app through the Google Play Store. – Ed.)

Obviously typing and working on an iPhone are much more difficult than would have been the case on my iPad or computer, so after a few efforts to enter my dogs’ records I quit trying. However, I analyzed the setup of the program and absolutely understand how it would be extremely helpful for a new owner who is not certain in which direction the new pet’s activities should be directed.

I can appreciate the app’s step-by-step approach for the pet owner. I take my two Whippets on a two-mile walk every morning, followed by a shorter evening walk. My dogs also enjoy an intense run in a fenced area once or twice a week. P5 could be a fun way to keep track of their activities, that is, when they’re not spending time on the couch in my office or lounging in the backyard.

The many videos (37 in all, if I counted correctly) are well produced and inspiring. (I wish there had been a few more purebred dogs, though, but I’m glad at least there were some!) Advice and links would also be especially useful for a new owner who wants to be active with his or her dog.
