AKC Government Relations has just learned that the Pasadena City Council will hold a first reading of a breed-specific mandatory spay/neuter ordinance Monday, January 27th. The proposal will require the sterilization of “pit bulls,” defined as “Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American pit bull terriers, American Stafford Terriers or any mixed breed of dog which contains as an element of its breeding any of these breeds, unless they qualify for one of the narrow exemptions.” It is imperative that concerned residents and responsible dog owners attend this meeting and highlight the ineffectiveness of breed-specific legislation. Dogs that have medical conditions which prohibit sterilization, are currently being used as a service or law enforcement dogs, or who qualify as a “show dog” are exempt from this ordinance. To take advantage of the show dog exemption one of the following must apply:
