The numbers are in for the big Montgomery County Weekend in suburban Philadelphia PA, and they are impressive. Over the four-day weekend, October 4th through 7th, the fancy will be treated to almost 5,000 entries in the Terrier Groups. Five thousand…that’s as many Terriers as we normally see here in the US in an entire month at all the all-breed shows combined. The all-breed shows will reap the benefit as well.

The Hatboro Kennel Club will open the weekend on Thursday in Wrightstown PA with 1,760 dogs entered in the regular classes. Its Friday show will increase to 1,992 dogs. The Devon Dog Show Association will host 2,078 dogs on Saturday with its show in Ludwigs Corner PA, some 50 miles west of Wrightstown. History tells us that while at least one Terrier will pick up a BIS at one of the three all-breed shows, one of the breeds outside the Group will poach on the points in the Terrier Group and walk away with a Best in Show.

GCH CH Doubloon’s Extreme Play

But back to the main event, and make no mistake, this is a Terrier weekend. Five breeds will have more than 100 entries. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers lead the entry with 135 in the regular classes. The country’s Number One Soft Coated Wheaten is GCH CH Doubloon’s Extreme Play, bred and owned by Elena Landa.

GCH CH Lomondview Clementina

The ubiquitous Scottish Terrier is close behind with 122 entries. GCH CH Lomondview Clementina is AKC’s Number One Scottish Terrier, all systems and is currently ranked as the Number Two Terrier in the US with seven all-breed Bests and 65 Terrier Group top prizes, the most of any Terrier. Phoebe was bred by Carol Annan, is owned by John & Daphne Eggert, and is handled by Ernesto Lara.

GCH CH Skyehigh’s Mkc Bonaparte

West Highland White Terriers brought in 120 entries this year. The Westie holding down the Number One spot is GCH CH Skyehigh’s Mkc Bonaparte. Party Boy, who was this year’s breed winner at Westminster, was bred by Lindy Barrow, is owned by Linda Barrow & Jaimi Glodek, and is handled by Allison Foley.

GCH CH Penaire’s Chip Leader at Longvue

While we don’t see many Airedale Terriers at shows these days, there will be 104 at MKC. The Number One Airedale is GCH CH Penaire’s Chip Leader At Longvue. Jaxson was bred by Joan & William Clarke & Todd & April Clyde, is owned by the Clarkes, Lee Steeves & Ken Curren, and is handled by Jenny Wornall Rangel.

GCH CH Allaruth Just Kidding V Sole Baye

Miniature Schnauzers come in next with 101. The Number One Miniature Schnauzer is GCH CH Allaruth Just Kidding V Sole Baye. Justin brings the most momentum to Blue Bell PA, with eight all-breed Bests and 38 Terrier Groups. Five of those BIS and 28 of the Group Ones have come in the last 10 weeks. Justin was bred and is owned by Yvonne B. Phelps & Ruth Ziegler, and handled by Bergit Kabel.

If you are a fan of “the dogs that go to earth,” come to Blue Bell PA on Sunday, October 7th, and see all 29 breeds. Nowhere else will you see this quantity and quality in one place. I will be at all four shows reporting from ringside. Be sure to stop by and say hello. And that’s today’s Back Story.
