As much as I am enjoying irritating the animal rights loonies on both sides of the Atlantic, I feel inclined to move on to some more positive subject. I am old and have a short attention span. Besides, the show scene is so much more cheerful here in the US than in England.

It’s too bad, seeing as how we here in the US have such a connection to the United Kingdom. Not only do we have that whole 1776 cutting the apron strings thing, but we have a major connection to the British dog world. I have already mentioned that the Pekingese, PalaceGarden Bianca, that was the judge’s Best of Breed at Crufts on Thursday was bred and is owned by John & Jean Smith breeders of the 2012 Westminster Kennel Club Best In Show winner, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy.

CH Miletree Constellation JW

Another trans-Atlantic familial relation was the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel , CH Miletree Constellation JW, aka Sonny, who was Best Of Breed at Crufts on Thursday.  Sonny is brother to GCH CH Miletree Northern Star at Shirmont, aka Teddy, who was Best In Show at yesterday’s Garden City Kansas Kennel Club show. Congratulations to Sonny’s breeders/owners & Teddy’s breeders, Peter & Ruta Towse, and Teddy’s owners Dr Bruce & Shirley Henry, & Teddy’s handler Clint Livingston

CH Whistlestop's Elements of Magic

Yesterday was a good day for Irish Water Spaniels as the IWS, CH Whistlestop’s Elements of Magic CD RN, aka Merlin, picked up the Gun Dog Group One at Crufts while his full sister, GCH CH Whistlestop’s Riley on Fire, was picking up the BIS at the Monticello New York Kennel Club show in Milton NY. Merlin was bred by Americans Colleen McDaniel & Stacy Duncan and is owned by Colleen & Briton Judith Carruthers. Colleen & Stacy are also the breeders of Riley who is owned by Tom Urban,& Bethany Urban & Gregory Siner and handled by Greg. Congratulations to them all.

After getting over 1776 & 1812, it would be a pity if we in the dog world could not reach an accommodation with our English brothers. However, it is the British Kennel Club that will have to follow the example of the American Kennel Club and stand up to the forces that would rob every English family of their purebred dog. And that’s today’s Back story.
