After a couple of weeks with just a few options, dog fanciers will be treated this week to 34 all-breed shows across five different time zones. Usually lots of locations mean fewer points at each, but this week, those seeking to better their rankings will have ample opportunity to pick up points.
The show week begins today in Greensboro NC with the Danville Kennel Club show, the first of five shows hosted by the DKC, the Greater Hickory Kennel Club & the Carolina Kennel Club at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. By the time they are finished, they will have handed out almost 5,000 points. The Jesse James Kennel Club & the Greater Emporia Kennel Club team up for four all-breed shows in Topeka KS starting Friday. Together they will bring in over 4,000 entries. Toy exhibitors can add another 200 at Thursday’s Mo-Kan Toy Dog Club.
I will be in Greeley CO for the hometown kennel club’s two shows this weekend. The GKC’s shows benefit from the Rocky Mountain Hound Association of Colorado’s two limited-breed shows on Thursday & Friday, and six specialties on Friday. There will be almost 3,800 points up for grabs at the all-breed shows and an extra 600 for the Hounds attending the RMHAC’s shows. The shows offer an opportunity to see multiple specimens of some of our rarer breeds. Among the entries I will seek out are the 25 Spinoni Italiani, the 42 Portuguese Water Dogs, the 16 Bedlington Terriers, the 20 Skye Terriers and the 33 Dalmatians.
The numbers are just as big in the Pacific Northwest where the Olympia Kennel Club will be in Enumclaw WA for the weekend. The Ranier Sporting Dog Association’s limited-breed show will kick it off on Thursday, followed by 21 specialties on Friday. Thanks to the RSDA, look for Sporting entries of almost 600 a day at the two all-breed shows. In the Midwest, Muncie IN has drawn almost 3,000 entries over four days for the Muncie Kennel Club & the Anderson Kennel Club’s four shows beginning Thursday. The Reno Kennel Club hosts the weekend in that Nevada city, offering spectacular scenery, lots of night life and better than 2,400 points.
Here in my backyard, you can get as nearly as many points at the three all-breed shows courtesy of the Olive Branch Mississippi Kennel Club and the Memphis Kennel Club in Southaven MS, just down the street from Graceland. You can even add Thursday’s Memphis Toy Dog Club to the mix if you like. Continuing our entry countdown, New Yorkers can take advantage of Friday’s Susque-Nango Kennel Club show and Saturday’s & Sunday’s Tioga County Kennel Club shows in upstate Apalachin NY to grab a share of the available 2,100 points. New Englanders will only have two chances, the Wachusett Kennel Club’s Saturday & Sunday shows in Fitchburg MA where 1,800 points are at stake.
Wisconsin exhibitors will spend a long weekend in Marshfield WI trying to get a share of the 1,600 points offered by the Wisconsin Rapids Kennel Club & the hometown Marshfield Area Kennel Club. Drawing smaller numbers are the St. Clairsville Ohio Kennel Club and the West Oahu Kennel Club where you might not see a lot of points, but we bet you will see some beautiful dogs competing. With a nod to Connie Francis, that’s where the dogs are, and that’s today’s Back Story.
