I’m here at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo CA on the northern shore of San Francisco Bay for the Lake County Kennel Club’s opener of the four-day fun fest known as Woofstock. There are a lot of dogs to be seen, and we stayed up all night trying to schedule as many as we could. This morning we are starting with Kimberly Meredith-Cavanna’s ring where she is scheduled to see two Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, five Pharaoh Hounds & 17 Irish Wolfhounds. I don’t get to see many big Wolfhound entries, and this one had puppies, young adults and five specials. Taking home the Best Of Breed was GCH CH Quest Rachel Alexandra of Kerry Arc.
On my way over to Michele Billings’ ring to watch her 22 Bouviers des Flandres, I stopped at Phil Freilich’s ring to catch his Giant Schnauzer Best Of Breed judging. His breed winner was one of the many here today from outside the Bay Area, the country’s Number One Giant and Number Two Working Dog, GCH CH Kenro’s Witching Hour, who calls Michigan home.
I have watched Michele Billings for over 40 hears as a handler and judge, and I am always impressed with her command of the ring. Today was no different. After a deliberate and orderly consideration, she named GCH CH Stonepillar’s Steel Blu her best Bouvier.
After lunch I dropped in on Vicki Abbott to watch her nine Tibetan Terriers and 12 Shiba Inu. The Tibetan Terrier can be a serious Herding dog or beautiful family pet or both. The one that caught judge Abbott’s eye was CH Players Palermo.
The Shiba Inu is an alert, confident breed, designed to hunt game in thick underbrush. The are dedicated to their owners and inspire dedication in them. The one that inspired the judge today was CH Cantebriar Red E Set Go.
